Korean visual artist Fi Jae Lee has become the first Korean recipient of the prestigious Dorothea Tanning Award, as announced by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Known for blending traditional Buddhist painting techniques with contemporary styles, Lee’s multidisciplinary work spans drawing, painting, sculpture, and performance. Her intricate shrines, crafted from materials like reinforced plastic and gold pigment, honor "parasitic bodies"—a concept encompassing extinct species, imagined beings, and sensory constructs. Lee's recent solo exhibition, Excavating Future Species at Artspace3 in Seoul, showcased her visionary approach, cementing her place as a groundbreaking force in contemporary art.
